Album

Ton Koopman and Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra. The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra - Johann Sebastian Bach: Orchestral Suite No. 23: musicologist Ton Koopman leads performances of six Bach cantatas in a mostly successful filmed musical venture. The performances by the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir adhere to accepted standards of 'Baroque performance' while manifesting Bach's red-blooded music with passionate abandon. Especially welcomed is the inclusion of BWV 106 'Actus Tragicus', Bach's funeral cantata of humble mien and everlasting richness, with a superbly played opening sonatina, the singers entering the stage only toward its conclusion. Ton Koopman one of the great interpreters of Early Music admires Johann Sebastian Bach more than any other composer because in his music, mind and emotion are in a fantastic balance. And so Bach in addition to Haydns Symphony No. 98 is also the focus of this concert. We hear courtly splendour in the Orchestral Suite No. 3 and the glories of Baroque vocal music in his Magnificat and the motet Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden. Bach selects the most vivid colours for the newly written text of choruses and arias, an amazing kaleidoscope of sound. Koopmans choir never sacrifices verve to its technical polish and his instrumental forces are outstanding: the trumpet of Grosser Herr delightfully understated, reflecting the unimportance of earthly pomp immaculate horns intonation spot on from buzzing period oboes. Christmas Oratorio, BWV 248 by Johann Sebastian Bach Performer: Lisa Larsson Soprano, Elisabeth von Magnus Alto, Christoph Prégardien Tenor, Klaus Mertens Bass Conductor: Ton Koopman OrchestraEnsemble. Bach, Johann Sebastian : Mass for 3 voices, chorus, 2 oboes, strings & continuo in G minor, BWV 235 BC E5. Bach, Johann Sebastian : Magnificat. With this extensive summary of Bach's church music from his period as a cantor and music director in Leipzig, Koopman and his crew once more provide an excellent supplement to their unsurpassed interpretation of the complete cantatas.
