Who Do We Think We Are is the seventh studio album by the English hard rock band Deep Purple, released in 1973. It was Deep Purple's last album with singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover until 1984s Perfect Strangers. Musically, the record showed a move to a more blues based sound, even featuring scat singing. Although its production and the band's behavior after its release showed the group in turmoil, with frontman Gillan remarking that we'd all had major illnesses and felt considerable. Deep Purple had kicked off the '70s with a new lineup and a string of brilliant albums that quickly established them along with fellow British giants Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath as a major force in the popularization of hard rock and heavy metal. All the while, their reputation as one of the decade's fiercest live units complemented this body of work and earned them almost instant legendary status. Deep Purple were also very influential to progressive music as well, with their style evolving over the years and incorporating a variety of genres from art rock to blues to psychedelia and more. Reviewed in Canada on February 2, 2016. Deep Purple followed up the world conquering Machine head with this clear attempt at creating a facsimile. Unfortunately, relationships within the band were rapidly reaching breaking point, and any semblance of harmony had all but disappeared. Indeed, before the next album Burn was recorded, Ian Gillan and Roger Glover would have moved on. I think some fans could find redeemable features on Who Do We Think We Are, but I'll always look at this album as something tainted and preferably created by another band. 2 stars
