John Simon's Album. Producer John Simon did a pair of albums of his own during the 1970s, starting with John Simon's Album 1970, which was two years in the making and featuring many of the musicians with whom he'd been working over that period, including Cyrus Faryar, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, Rick Danko, Delaney Bramlett, Leon Russell, Jim Gordon, Carl Radle, Jim Price, and Rita Coolidge, Bobby Whitlock, and Jean Millington. Perhaps not surprisingly, John Simon's Album mostly resembles the first two Band albums, with a clear, sharp, brittle sound rooted in a multitude of popular music strain. Joe Simons series of charting singles continued into late 1968 with two modest R&B hits Message From Maria got to 31, and Looking Back reached 42. His third album, Simon Sings, was released in early 1969 on the Sound Stage 7 label. It featured both singles plus many other strong songs, including a splendid country-soul cover of Willie Nelsons Funny How Time Slips Away he wasnt the first and wouldnt be the last soul singer to record this song. It was a solid and consistent album, mostly made up of somber string-backed ballads, which were fast becoming Simons specialty. It w. Simon Sings, 1969. Misty Blue, 03:10. Looking Back, 02:24.
