Brittens ballet score for The Prince of the Pagodas was commissioned in 1954 for a three-act ballet by John Cranko, mounted by the Sadlers Wells Ballet in 1957. For the scenario, Cranko had conflated a number of fables: Beauty and the Beast, The Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and King Lear. He apparently regarded the plot as a thread on which to hang a series of divertissements. Britten provided more music than Cranko found he required but refused to allow the score to be cut or reordered. The ballet proved unwieldy and was dropped from the repertoire. Cranko mounted it for the Stuttgart and L. Today the Royal Ballet remains the resident ballet company at the Royal Opera House, conducting its own tours internationally, and it continues to be the parent company of the Royal Ballet School, which is now based at White Lodge, Richmond Park and premises in Floral Street, which are adjacent to and have direct access to the Royal Opera House. The Prince of the Pagodas - made on Darcey Bussell and Jonathan Cope. However, Kenneth MacMillan was given the position, and Nureyev left the Royal Ballet as a Principal soon after to be a guest dancer internationally, later becoming Artistic Director of the Paris Opera Ballet in 1983. Sir Kenneth MacMillan's glorious version of The Prince of the Pagodas provides a fascinating and magnificent spectacle of classical dance on the grandest scale. Nicholas Georgiadis' enchanting designs complement Britten's only ballet score by establishing a fairy tale ambience, and Darcey Bussell produces a dazzling performance as Princess Rose. The principal players are magnificent. A grand achievement. Kenneth MacMillan. After the retirement of Crankos Pagodas, De Valois was intent on using the score for a new version: It is all there to be re-choreographed she wrote in her book, Step by Step. The new Prince of the Pagodas finally premiered on 7 December 1989, to mixed reception from critics who found the choreography inventive, yet the plot unsatisfactory. David Bintley. Benjamin Britten b. 1913 in Lowestoft, Suffolk, d. 1976 is one of the most important British composers of the 20th century. As a young boy, he showed exceptional talent which he would later on prove with Peter Grimes 1945, the opera that propelled him to international stardom. The Royal Ballet Benjamin Britten: The Prince of the Pagodas - Rose and the Prince Principle: Johnathan Cope, Darcey Bussell Conductor: Ashley MacMillan's choreography has been a staple of the Royal Ballet's repertory since 1965. As artistic director of the company, he created innovative works and brought to prominence innumerable stars. Darcey Bussell, shown here in the role in 2003, also owed her first principal role to MacMillan. Aged 19, she was chosen by MacMillan to star in his last full-length ballet, Prince of the Pagodas. With a score by Benjamin Britten, Prince of the Pagodas is a rather psychoanalytical fairy tale, with the heroine princess Rose travelling through her subconscious, dealing with various suitors along the way. This version is a revival by choreographer Kenneth Macmillan and the Royal Ballet who better to revive this thoroughly English ballet Macmillan scraps Cranko's choreography and original scenario for a more Freudian and sexual take on the story. The story concerns an aging King and his two daughters, Princess Belle Epine and Princess Belle Rose. It now seems inevitable that the Prince of the Pagodas will join the repertoire with Prokofiev's now-beloved ballets. This production is superb, but if you don't care for it, rest assured that because it exists there will be more in the future. Darcey Bussell. Jonathan Cope. The Royal Ballet. On my birthday last Thursday, I treated myself to a matinee performance of Don Quixote by the Bolshoi Ballet at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Im not a huge fan of classical ballet, but I figured this might be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Besides, I viewed it as an homage to my mother, who enrolled me Erin VanGelder Dance.
