In nearly every respect, Swedish troubadour Kristian Matsson's second full-length outing as the Tallest Man on Earth is a direct continuation of the stripped-down roots folk style he introduced on his debut - an album that was deeply, unambiguously steeped in rural American folk tradition but also the product of a strong singular vision and voice. Earlier in the year, The Tallest Man on Earth had released one of 2008s most powerful records, one that Pitchfork praised, calling Matsson a natural-born folksinger, earnest, clever, and comforting. Shallow Grave' could not have been more simple, just Matssons commanding vocals with an acoustic guitar or banjo, recorded at his home in Dalarna, Sweden. Although the album was released on the Swedish label Gravitation without the help of widespread distribution, the story of The Tallest Man on Earth spread far and wide through word of mouth. The Wild Hunt isnt just another folk album this is acoustic rock n roll from a man with a story to tell. released April 13, 2010. The Wild Hunt. Play album. Im not about to say that the comparison isnt inviting, or even inaccurate, but the off-handedness with which many compare Kristian Matsson to early Bob Dylan is really starting to irk me. Yes, the two are folk mavericks whose material is instrumentally skeletal, and, yes, both have voices that are acidic and abrasive, as well as emotional and humane. Like its predecessor, The Wild Hunt is built upon swift, brisk melodies and a mastery of the acoustic guitar the ability to fingerpick gingerly than strum violently without even a second going past, and without ever seeming flashy. Still the album is spotted with inconsistencies. The album starts out strong but swings into a depressive tone that doesn't match the lyricism and tone put forth in the first half of the album. That might be the point but it doesn't hit me. Also would appreciate if this voice was mixed a little better. The Wild Hunt is a really fresh and modern take on folk music. The Tallest Man on Earth echoes the influence of Bob Dylan's early works whilst still holding his own identity. The lyrics are incredibly poetic and the whole sound of this album is just warm and comforting. Swedish folkie Kristian Matsson, aka The Tallest Man On Earth, has managed to effect an eerily persuasive impression of the young Bob Dylan on this second album.
